Netherlands v Iceland Tips

Group Nine leaders Holland can become the first side to qualify for South Africa 2010 if they can record an away victory over Iceland on Saturday.

 

Holland have a 100% in Group Nine, and because there are less teams in the group, a sixth straight victory over Iceland on Saturday would put them out of reach of second placed Scotland, and mean that the Dutch could then have a full year of preparation and experimentation before the World Cup in South Africa next summer.

 

Holland are a best-priced 2/5 (VictorChandler) to pick up all three points on Saturday, and though it is a prohibitive price for all but the biggest of big-hitters, it is almost impossible to see Iceland (8/1, Bet365) winning or even holding the Dutch to a draw (4/1, Ladbrokes).

 

The Dutch have scored twelve and conceded only once in their five group matches so far. They are available at 8/11 (WilliamHill) to win to nil, and having done so in four out of five games, it is very likely they will manage that feat again, against an Iceland side who are not renowned for their attacking prowess.

 

Holland won the reverse fixture two-nil, with goals from defender Clint Mathejisn and Real Madrid striker Klass-Jan Huntelaar. A repeat of that result is the bookies favourite at 5/1 (Bet365), and a three-nil victory is a short 17/2 (SportingBet). One warning for those who are expecting a runaway Holland win is that their two away qualification victories have only been by a single goal (2-1 against Macedonia and 1-0 against Norway) and in both those matches, the score was nil-nil at half-time.

 

It may, therefore, be worth backing the Draw/Holland option on the half-time/full-time market, which is available at a generous 17/2 with VictorChandler.
